Domain / Hosting / Design / Maintenance
Domain
£10-00 pa
This is an additional payment – not included in the hosting / design package
It costs roughly £10 per year to register / renew a domain. The company I use and recommend is tsoHost (www.tsohost.co.uk). The ‘.co.uk’ and ‘.org.uk’ domains are cheaper than ‘.com’ domains. Often companies will give you a cheap deal for the fist year. As of Sept 2020 tsoHost charge £6.95+VAT to renew a .co.uk domain
Hosting
£5 pm
It costs between £5 and £15 per month to host a domain. It’s very much ‘You get what you pay for’. I use and recommend SiteGround. SiteGround, like most companies, offers cheap introductory offers. As of Sept 2020 their ‘StartUp’ normal price is £11.99+VAT. But there are limitations to these cheap deals. If you host your site with me (on SiteGround) then you get all the features of an expensive and superior hosting package.
Design
£250 pa
How long is a piece of string? You can do it yourself for nothing, or you can pay £1000s for a professional designer. Or I’ll do it for you for a very reasonable price!
If you invest hours of study you can become an expert in html, css and javascript and then you can create a website from scratch – but you will still need to pay for web hosting (see above).
WordPress is free and very powerful but it is quite complicated and takes a while to become proficient. WordPress is enhanced by Themes and Plugins. Some of these are quite expensive – up to £100 a year & more. If I design and host your website, then you have the advantage of all these enhanced features at no extra cost to you.
Other DIY alternatives are Wix £6+VAT per month Weebley £4+VAT per month Squarespace £10+VAT per month All these can produce excellent websites, but there is quite a steep learning curve and they require considerable time and effort to master. Often at these lower prices adverts will be included and you will not have your own domain… Instead of mysite.com you will have ‘weebly’ branding like this mysite.weebly.com. This does not look very professional or stylish.
Maintenance & Security
Included in your hosting / design package
Again you can do it yourself for nothing – but you will have to pay for a superior hosting package to get it done properly.
Maintaining a website involves keeping the text and pictures up to date. It also means keeping the themes and plugins up to date.
Security measures must be implemented to protect websites from malware and hackers, who pose a constant threat. Regular backups should be taken in case disaster strikes. In WordPress themes and plugins must be kept up to date
If you have your website hosted by me, then I will make sure that all the themes and plugins are regularly updated. The site will be regularly scanned for security issues. Full backups will be made every 24 hours – so if anything goes wrong, it can be rectified in minutes!
